The New York Times (Dec. 22, 1852), writing of author Caroline Chesebro', advises that people with "such smooth, sleek convictions as are obtained from custom, will do well to eschew her faithfully. Their coats will be smartly rubbed the wrong way, merely to afford the lady pyrrhonist the pleasure of watching the electric flashes."
The Elizabeth City (N.C.) "Old North State" of Jan. 5, 1850, reports that a certain gentleman called on before dinner "is rougher than a hedge-hog rubbed the wrong way."
