这是现代英语单词的发展与演变地图。词源不是定义，它们是对英语词汇的历史含义和发音的解释。
单词的词源解释的结尾会标注日期，表示该单词有书面记录的最早年份。这应该被视为近似值，尤其是在1700年之前，因为一个词可能在口语中使用了数百年，才在一份有存留至今的手稿中出现。
